Air Travel

Airports - they are a world all their own!

I travel a lot for work and I usually drive everywhere. I like to drive - especially in the summer when I can have the windows down and the stereo blasting! Besides, driving allows me much more flexibility and who doesn't like that?

In the past couple of weeks I have decided to fly rather than drive, mostly for convenience. Well, convenience in that I don't have to pay attention to the road for 10+ hours at a time. One would think that I could be so much more productive flying rather than driving, but that just isn't the case. I can get about 30 minutes of computer time while in the terminal waiting to board the plane and that's about it. The planes these days - the CRJs I've been flying on, anyway - are too crowded to even think about pulling out my laptop in flight. Oh well. At least I get to work on crossword puzzles!

When you travel, do you prefer to drive or fly? Take a train? Ride the Greyhound? (Had a Greyhound trip once, years ago, and vowed to never EVER do that again!)

How do you travel?

I don't travel often, but if the trip is short enough driving is preferred. The wife and I recently took a trip to Salt Lake City from Dayton (her family reunion) and we few via an Airbus 310. It wasn't as cramped as some (like a EJsomething that we flew Dayton to Orlando a few years ago) but still not the most comfortable. The best thing was that the airline had TV installed on the seat backs so for $6 you could watch Direct TV for the duration of the flight. I flew a CRJ or some regional from Dayton to Colorado Springs in 2005 and, like you, found it was barely possible to open a 15" laptop in the space allotted. So I spent most of the time shifting my legs around (I'm 6' 4") trying not to let them fall asleep on the 3hr flight.

Trips that are around 3-6 hrs by car are great. Nothing like being alone in a car with your thoughts, cruising down the highway. Better scenery, too.

I like going to new places and seeing new things, but I hate getting there. And, occasionally, I have to travel for work. Planes are uncomfortable. While I am not tall (5'8"), I am very broad (or at least broader than the average 12 year old the for which seats are designed). Driving is fun (gives me time to think - not always a good thing) but long drives can get tedious. I've only taken a train once - it was actually fun - but trains do not go everywhere I need to go. As for buses, not going there.

I travel however I can. There is a point where the speed of flying is worth the cost. An hour flight is actually four hours between getting to the airport early to be boarded and strip searched and all that. I've taken many Greyhounds, and some trips are better than others. Been a long time since I rode a train. Was hoping Ohio would get the high speed rail so there could be some competition when it comes to transportation. Nope.

Since I drive a semi for a living its geting very dangerous dealing with all the crazy people trying to get them self KILLED. Planes are uncomfortable but MUCH safer and quicker. Nothing is better on a sunny day then a Harley on the back roads.

I don't HATE the getting there part - in fact, sometimes that's the best part! It depends on the reason for my trip and the amount of time I have available. I absolutely LOVE summer road trips that have open-ended time frames so I can stop to check out stuff at will. Work travel, on the other hand, is usually rush, rush, rush!

You hit the nail on the head, Thrill - the time factor. The actual time en route may be much less when flying, but when you add in all the other crap associated with flying it takes just as much time as driving. Well, usually.

I sympathize with you semi drivers! It's as if people don't comprehend basic physics - you know, the mass and acceleration stuff? Do people really think they can cut in front of a semi, slam on the brakes, and NOT get crushed?

I forgot to mention bikes, but then again my mind was on work travel.

Stay safe out there!

I rarely travel, for either business or pleasure. The few business trips I take are overseas, so that means I have to fly. It's not easy, since I'm 6'5", and my company doesn't allow me to upgrade. When I take my kids to visit my parents, I drive since it's only about 5 hours, and my car has a DVD player to keep the kids from doing too much damage to each other.

You make a good point - and the company along for the trip would make the travel more enjoyable. So, having someone you enjoy pressing up against would be the solution to a crowded flight.

I travel extensively and usually by plane, but I look at the total trip (distances, travel times, length of trip, cost, what I'll be doing at the destination) to decide on how I'll go. Outside the US, flying is still pretty convenient and is often a cheap and convenient way to move. Yesterday, I strolled into the airport at 4pm, returned my rental car, bought a ticket for the 4:30pm departure, got through security and to the gate to board by 4:15 and was off on time. I hope (but do not expect) that the US will get back to the simpler days of yester-year, but I'm afraid that being afraid will haunt us forever.

While I try to minimize my time in airports, I do agree that they can be interesting microcosms and fun to explore. I do enjoy a well designed airport and most of the more recent one I've seen are very well laid out. Tokyo's new international terminal at Haneda is one of my favorites.
