Selective American pride

I have a lot of respect for Obama as he's tried his hardest to keep to what he said he would do, but there's too many people left over from years of morons and greedy republicans to save this country. We're screw IMO...

As for the dating scene. I've dated several men that "served our country" and hate them all now. I'm utterly paranoid of dating any new ones after soo many failures in that area, all of them were violent, abusive, arrogant, self serving meatheads! Also, as it's clear I have no respect for this country I don't want anything to do with someone willing to die for it. If you serve, don't bother contacting me, thank you!

Interesting. I do see a connection between young "brave" idiots full of testosterone who feel the best way to prove they are a man is to go to a foreign country and kill people and being violent and abusive in a relationship.

Remember most of the "soldiers" that have served overseas never see combat but want to sound like big shot heroes so the tell war stories. They know nothing of life or living. They feel the need to prove the manhood that serving as a clerk or supply or truck driver never gave them, so what do they do. They pick fights and beat up on women.

The world would be a better place without most of them.

On that note. I am not too proud of what both parties have done to our country. That is why I am a Libertarian.

Good fortune to you

Hello there. I'm sorry to hear your experiences with men in the service went that way. Being a former Marine, I felt I had to respond to this.

I am certain that as the citizens of our country become more and more vastly ignorant and arrogant, there is a corresponding increase in the number of men in the miliary who are those types, violent prejudiced meatheads, etc. From the number of articles I've read about atrocities committed over in Iraq and Afghanistan, this bears out to be true.

Personally, I am an extremely liberal man who was raised by two very compassionate parents, who taught me the value of responsibility to others (social responsibility) versus the selfishness of personal responsibility. They taught me to think for myself and this naturally leads one to question authority figures and institutions (thank god! as virtually all those so-called authorities are not only flat out wrong about everything, they are illegitimate), and they taught me fairness and a strong sense of justice that comes with it.

But what they didn't give me was a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence, so when a recruiter from the Marines pitched those exact things to me, I joined. I was in the Reserves, from 1993 to 2000. Never got called up to any wars, thankfully.

I can say that my experiences in the Corps were absolutely worthwhile, they helped round me out in areas where I was lacking, building character, mental toughness and self-discipline, virtues that normally are associated only with conservatives of course. It was exactly what I needed, but I got out because I didn't need to live the rest of my life being told what to do by the occasional idiot ego-maniac, and other reasons.

The men I served with were in general upstanding citizens, and we were taught to be complete gentlemen towards women and civilians. I know those who end up seeing plenty of combat get pretty fucked in the head one way or another, but to those who didn't, they were exemplary citizens and soldiers. Maybe my experiences are skewed by being mostly with other reservists, who only serve one weekend a month and two weeks each summer; all that time in the civilian world makes for a very different overall experience.

I think you may have just had a run of bad luck with military men so far. I have known many men and women who served or are still in the service and they are very nice people, not abusive or aggressive, psychotic, etc. It's like with law enforcement- they are organizations which by their very nature are going to draw more of the conservative types who get off on being belligerent, self-serving and cocky and overly assertive, authoritative even though they're incompetent as leaders, unjust, hot-headed, inconsiderate, and power hungry. But make no mistake, there are some liberals in those organizations as well. I speak from experience.

There are a lot of men who join the military and it defines their whole existence. They eat, live and breathe being a "soldier", "Marine", fighter pilot, etc. But some of us just pass through and move on to many other life experiences. I have done and seen so many different things in my life already, and while being a Marine is something I will always be proud of, it does not define me.

Anyhow, I wish you luck on this site. Learn how to sift through the detritus and you'll find an occasional keeper.

Regards,
Vince
